The area was previously governed separately by the Warringah, Manly and Pittwater councils; however, in 2016 this changed due to an amalgamation of the 3 councils into one, the Northern Beaches council. The region was historically rural, seeing only very gradual urbanisation until the 1960s, when better roads allowed the Sydney’s urban sprawl to extend further and faster; today it is well and truly part of the metropolis, with much of the region now populated by housing developments. Far from the traditionally slow-paced lifestyle associated with suburbia, the region enjoys a lot of tourism and activity, due in part to the famed beaches from which it takes its name.

Northern Beaches is an exclusive region enjoying a thriving real estate market with a large number of properties for sale at any given time, many of which are examples of the high-end real estate Sydney is so well known for, with valuations often reaching 7 figures; this, along with the beachside locale and proximity to the Central Business District, makes the district a popular location amongst the higher earners with jobs in the heart of the city, providing constant demand to meet the ample supply of property available. While the natural serenity surrounding the beauty of the region is far from lost, the region is full of life, sustained by excellent transport connections to the rest of central and greater Sydney.
