Berwick is a suburb south-east of the centre of Melbourne, Victoria. Located within the Local Government Area of the City of Casey, Berwick was named in the mid-19th century for Berwick-Upon-Tweed, the hometown of an early English settler. Initially a farming settlement, the area’s development was kickstarted by the construction of a coaching road between the Gippsland region and Melbourne, with a post office opening shortly thereafter. In the late 20th century, Melbourne began to extend to the east, encompassing Berwick and the surrounding regions within its growing borders. New developments have been consistent since the 1990s as the area became more and more urban, but in many ways the style and mien of the township as it was before urbanisation still shine through.
41 kilometres from the Central Business District in inner Melbourne, Berwick strikes a perfect balance between allowing its residents to embrace the benefits of urban life, and allowing them to keep its drawbacks at arm’s length. A number of schools can be found within the municipality ranging from primary schools to a university campus. Berwick is serviced by Berwick Railway Station, as well as being very easily traversable by road. Full of excellent facilities ranging from hospitals to parks, Berwick is an established but growing suburb with a rich history and excellent future prospects.
